Divided by Pie: Chapter Six

By Lilith Anne P.

Won’t the aliens be chasing us though? Melanie thought. Shouldn’t we be somewhere safer?

Despite her thoughts, Melanie knew that she would have to get sleep at some time, and she couldn’t just walk home now and say “Hi!” to the aliens wandering in her home.

Melanie found a sturdy tree then sat down besides it. She then allowed herself to lean against the back of the tree.

That night was extremely cold, colder than Melanie had ever experienced. She felt as if she would freeze to death, but didn’t dare move to attempt to become warmer. She was too afraid that they would be found by aliens or that she would awaken one of her friends if she did.

Finally, after what felt like forever, Melanie fell asleep.

The next morning, she awoke to the sound of shuffling. Alien! She thought, but she didn’t dare open her eyes. Maybe if she didn’t move, she wouldn’t be noticed. Maybe their eyesight was bad, so unless you moved they couldn’t tell that you were moving.

Then she heard a sigh, a human sigh, and more shuffling.

It’s safe. She thought. She opened her eyes.

Gretta was pacing in the center of the clearing, looking around cautiously as she did. She looked as if she hadn’t slept in years, which she probably hadn’t. She must of been afraid as well. Melanie also noticed that it was bright outside, and she was much warmer than she was the night before.

Gretta glanced to Melanie, then tiptoed over to her and knelt by her side. Melanie sat up straight as Gretta walked over to her. She was tired of having her head leaning against a hard surface.

“Sorry, did I wake you?” Gretta whispered.

“Not really.” Melanie lied.

“Oh, okay.”

“So why were you pacing?”

“I couldn’t sleep last night. It was too cold and I was too scared.” Gretta sighed.

“It took me forever to fall asleep.”

“And you’re waking us all up as well. What are you doing?” A tired voice from behind them mentioned. Melanie thought she recognized the voice as Amisi’s. Melanie looked back, and sure enough, Amisi was just sitting up from her sleep, and she was staring right at them.

“Discussing plans for getting the aliens off our planet.” Melanie lied. Maybe she would let them off the hook for that and leave them alone.

“Oh really? Let me see what you’re planning!” Amisi smiled as she ran over to them.

“Well, we don’t have anything yet,” Melanie stammered, “we were waiting on you to wake up.”

Six Keys: Chapter 1

The Disappearance

“Gabrielle, are you sure you can do this,” I ask my best friend as she is about to jump off the highest diving board. Gabrielle and I have been best friends since kindergarten. Even though we’re opposites, both of us enjoy the same things together. What I mean by opposites is that I’m a shy and timid girl and Gabrielle is confident and enthusiastic. Both of us are on the diving team so we know how to flip in the air and dive in without any splash. Gabby (as I call her) wanted to do all the stuff we’ve learned off the highest diving board. “Addie, I’ve been skydiving before. I’m pretty sure I can handle this”, she replies. Addie is short for Adalyn. It’s the nickname everyone calls me.

As she begins to jump, I stare with admiration wishing I had the courage to do that. When Gabby dives off she does a triple—no six somersaults in the air (how does she do it?) and dives straight in with very little splash. She made this dive look so easy. I look down at the pool to see if she came out, but all I see her friendship bracelet I made for her. Worried that she might be dead, I ran out of the pool and went to find Gabby’s twin brother Adrian. When I found him, I told him what I had seen. “But Addie, that’s impossible! She should’ve came out of the water by then,” he replies looking worried “, We have to find her.” Adrian and Gabby are very close twins. If something happens to one of them, the other will try to find his or her twin. They’re like two minds in one.

We decided to go back to the pool to investigate. When we got there, we saw a crowd of people surrounding the pool. Among those people were Adrian and Gabby’s parents. Both of them were sobbing (especially Mrs. Jade) over the fact that their daughter might be dead. Before either of us spoke, the police walked up to us and asked me several questions. I told them what had happened from her diving in to her floating bracelet. Both the police and Mr. And Mrs. Jade had puzzled expressions and told us to leave this investigation in their hands.

But Adrian (being Adrian) wouldn’t let them handle this. “, You should let me and Adalyn in this investigation. Besides Addie’s the one who saw this happen, you should let her in”, he argued. The police tried talk him out of this, but they couldn’t convince him to let go of this. While they were fighting, I noticed that there was a whirlpool forming in the pool. I tried to get their attention, but they were too busy to notice. After the whirlpool, I noticed that there wasn’t any water left. Not even a single drop. Once I got their attention I told them what had happened. They told everyone who was in the building to get out of the building to shut down the pool to investigate this matter. They also told us that they’ll give us more information in the next few weeks. Unfortunately for me and Adrian, a few weeks was too long for us to wait so we decided to join the investigators to help out. “Please officers,” I pleaded, “Adrian and I know a great deal about investigation. We could help you collect the evidence and analyze the DNA”.

But they weren’t convinced enough to let us in. Instead we tried to reason with them.      These are the reasons:

  1. I know exactly what happened to Gabby
  2. You can’t convince Adrian when he’s stubborn (believe me I’ve tried)
  3. This investigation could improve our skills
  4. I saw how the pool was drained.

Two of the reasons convinced them a little, but not enough to let us in. Luckily, Adrian had something that would finally convince the police to let us in the investigation. “Officers, we could help collect the evidence from the scene”, said Adrian, “We’ve done this kind of stuff before.” “Look kiddo, we appreciate your help, but we can handle it from here”, the police replied. “Oh sure you can”, said Adrian teasingly, “I mean you haven’t even found my sister’s body yet.” The police looked at each other with puzzled expressions. “What do mean we haven’t found the body yet!?”

Divided by Pie: Chapter Five

By Lilith Anne P.

“I hope we’re far enough into the forest.” One of the kids mentioned. This was Connor, a fifth grader that Melanie once had a crush on. When Jake got hold of that secret, he spread it all over the school. Melanie felt lucky that he didn’t believe anything he was told.

“We should be!” Bella exclaimed.

“Ah! Look! It’s an alien!” Jake exclaimed while pointing at Melanie. Melanie rolled her eyes and shook her head.

“We’ll all be killed if you keep yelling and giving away our locations.” Melanie said sarcastically.

“Really Jake?” Connor asked.

“Yes. Get used to it.”

Connor rolled his eyes.

“The world has obviously been invaded, what now?” One of the girls that Melanie didn’t recognize asked. She had blonde hair and blue eyes.

“Gretta, we’re supposed to survive. Duh!” Jake laughed. He pretended to flip his blonde hair, supposedly mocking Gretta, but his brown eyes had an evil glare that made it impossible to be an accurate imitation.

“This isn’t a time for play. The aliens might be searching for us, and we don’t want to be killed by them. Let’s put aside our differences and keep moving.” Another girl said. She had brown hair and glasses.

“I agree with Amisi. It’ll do us no good to fight.” Connor sighed.

“You two would make a cute couple if Melanie didn’t already have a crush on Connor.” Jake laughed. Melanie felt herself blushing, but stayed silent. Now was not the time to fall in love.

“If you’re not going to work with us than please leave, Jake. We’d be better off without your snarky comments.” Amisi exclaimed.

“Why should I? Is it ‘for the best of the group?’” Jake laughed.

“Leave. Now.” Connor exclaimed.

“Sheesh. Sorry. I don’t need you all anyway.” Jake exclaimed as he walked deeper into the forest.

Melanie thought it was cruel to push Jake out, although Amisi was right. He’d ruin their chances of survival.

Melanie then noticed that the sky was already darkening. She looked around to the rest of the kids, there were four of them now.

“It’s getting dark. Let’s get some rest, we’ll make a plan tomorrow morning.” Amisi sighed before she lied down on the forest floor.

Divided by Pie: Chapter Four

By Lilith Anne P.

Melanie removed her hand from Bella’s mouth and started running. Was the school really gone? Melanie wished more than anything that this was all a bad dream.

She burst through the trees and stopped. She looked on in horror as the toppled ruins of the school burned to ashes. She saw a few kids running out of the rubble, and screams as others tried to escape. Melanie wanted to run in and help them, but there was something wrong that held her back.

A flying saucer was landing by the rubble. Few children saw it, but those who did ran into the trees. Melanie ran back with them, and soon found out that Bella was running by her side.

They were far deeper in the forest than Melanie had ever ventured when they stopped. Melanie looked at them all, studying their faces. Some she recognized, some she didn’t.

She looked over to one of the other children, who she recognized was in her class. His name was Jake, and Melanie feared him. He was the kid who would always make fun of her and make her look like an absolute fool in front of the whole class, the one who would spot her and point out every mistake. Melanie hated him, yet she didn’t keep running.

At least he’s human she thought.
